external HDD not showing complete data.

i have a toshiba external hdd with 1tb capacity(931 gb is available) out of which 838 gb of data is stored The issue i am facng that i am not able to access almost half of the 838 gb data , i tried hidded tab and the command prompt { "dir /ah"} but it didn't work

What do you mean by not able to access it?

You can't really find it, or you get some sort of an error message when trying to access it?
If you get some sort of an access denied error message, you can follow this tutorial: http://preyerplanning.com/take-ownership-of-entire-hard-drive-in-windows-7.pdf

If it is just not showing, you can run some antivirus/malware scans.
What is the type of data?

It would be nice to provide a screenshot of Disk Management as well.
