Nothing against i3, Intel is a great chip set, no bones about it.I just think , if he's going Intel, no way do you not start with an i5,. Believe me, when I smoked my EVGA 790i ftw,. I researched 2 weeks solid before I began to buy parts ,I could go with what I'd call an extremely solid and build compared to an Intel budget build, i5-4xxx series so I wouldn't have to upgrade my existing ram.I'll just say AMD suited mMY needs and budget very well.

If you were able to bump up just a touch to the i3-6300 it really would be no contest to go Intel.

The FX line is dead and not a great place to invest for new parts. If you were able to afford a decent 1151 motherboard +the i3-6300 it would give you very good performance and a base to upgrade on in the future.

Here's what I did for $366 and run a minimum of 48 fps in my games and very often get 75 or better. Amd fx8320e OC to 4 GHz, EVGA gtx950 ftw, MSI 990 fxa gaming, 8gb G.skill RAM..going like for like, with Intel i5, was going to be about $100.I have to snicker at upgrade part argument as almost everyone overhauls at 5 or 6 years. But, your money to blow.

As much as i love my FX 8320 overclocked i would not invest in its lineup now unless you can get it cheap especially since ZEN is out soon i try to get 5 years out of a CPU before i upgrade and thats 3 years remaining by then ZEN will be cheaper and a good option :)

If you could get a used one for £55 i definitely recommend one since they overclock well and play 95% off games without bottleneck

The FX series was a good successor to the phenom 2

Thanks

Joe

Thing is, in 9/10 games the i3 6100 is faster than an FX-8xxx with a mild overclock.

Core i3 6100 (~$110)
B150 motherboard (~$65)
8GB DDR4 (~$35-40)

That's $210; with the remaining ~$150 you could almost get an RX 470. OP could pick up the soon-to-be-released GTX 1050Ti.

As fun as that might be it's a waste of power for the same performance and you'll need a mobo that costs as much as the i3 and cheap mobo combined

And like I said,,, for the $100 plus savings, I can live with my 48-75 fps.And just as a heads up, the New 1050 Ti, will only slightly , and I mean SLIGHTLY, out perform the 950 ftw, he'd be better suited to get a 970 or 980

Oh i see i have the M5A97 R2 EVO with the better VRAM cooling and the better 6+2 power phase, would a 4.2ghz be possible i have plenty of airflow and case fans ?

Thanks

Joe

You can do 4.5GHz with a 212 evo if you have respectable ambient temps, a decent 6+ phase board & decent case airflow.
Mines been running at that speed for 2+ years

It is obviously chip dependant , I'd top out at 1.45v max with an evo , some chips will do 4.5 atvthat voltage , the majority won't.

Do not go to a duo core chip..that being said, and most people don't think about this, but, IF you go to liquid cooling, you lose a lott of the air flow going over your chip sets causing much higher temps.
