Will an SSD connected to a SATA 2.0 connector out perform a standard HDD?

I have a laptop that I take with me a lot and though I do my best to take care of it, it sometimes gets knocked or rattled around accidentally, I've had two standard platter hard drives fail because of the movement, including a head crash. So I would like to put an SSD in my laptop but the SATA connection is only built/rated for SATA 2.0, aside from not having any moving parts - would an SSD out perform a standard 7200rpm HDD? I know most if not all SSD's on the market now are SATA 3.0 and I won't get the maximum potential/theoretical speed, but would there be a speed improvement worth spending the extra money for an SSD?

It's an Alienware 17-R2 currently using a standard factory HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - I'm considering an Intel or SanDisk SSD. I haven't actually looked inside the laptop, getting my hardware specs from Si Sandra.

Thanks

Solution
yes, a sata II ssd will still blow any 7200rpm hdd out of the water. don't even hesitate, its worth it. best one on the market samsung 850 evo.
