Hard drive issues laptop etc

So at 3AM last night I was on my Acer laptop running Win8.1 and playing solitare. All was well. Game froze and next thing I saw was the Acer screen and nothing else till it said something (I'm still tired and can't recall what) wasn't found (probably said HD). I assumed the HD was disconnected so I opened up the case and checked. It wasn't so I pulled the HD hoping it would reset. Nope. This morning I hooked the HD up to 2 other laptops both running Win7. I could feel the HD turning and it showed up as drive Q on both but would not open. So the thing is that I always use password protection on my laptops so the kids don't mess with them. I have tried everything to take ownership of the HD so I an access it but can't get it to work. I am a few days behind in backing up important info onto my personal cloud so it's not a panic situation just a head smacker. Any clues? Is it an issue of WIN 8 to Win 7? Thanks!

I did remember that after it froze on the acer screen while still in original laptop it said no bootable device found. I just ordered a 1T replacement HD on Amazon. I spilled a whole mug if coffee on this laptop about 2 months ago but took it apart right away and put a fan in it for 6 hours and it was fine. Lucky I suppose. No big deal about the few days of lost files.
