i5-4690K Bottleneck GTX 1060 [Battlefield 1]

So I have an i5-4690K on an H81M mobo, so I run it at stock. It's bottlenecking my EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC playing Battlefield 1 multiplayer. It's not really noticeable unless I'm watching the OSD, but it's dropping below 60fps only using 70% of the GPU.

If I decide to upgrade in the future, I suppose the topic of question would be:

A.) Do I buy a Z97M mobo for $100-$125 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128716)

B.) Do I sell my i5 (for ~$200 or less) and buy an i7-4790(for ~$300)

The price difference would be about the same, but performance would be better with the i7 right?

Just watched your video, really don't see any issue as it's perfectly playable, not dropping below 60fps very often. For the sake of this one game I wouldn't go upgrading anything, unless you really want to spend your money.

well yeah, bf1 pretty much chews up and spits out any cpu you throw at it, but my suggestion is either go with the 4790 or similar and save up for zen / kaby lake, hopefully amd will actually make somthing worth upgrading to this gen, or you could tough it out and wait for new gen to come out*

I wouldn't even suggest overclocking on a H81 motherboard, Only on the 'Z' boards. The H81 boards tend to have a CPU voltage cap at 1.2V as well - limiting any OC potential. What is your CPU usage and temperature in these instances? The CPU can only be the bottleneck if it is currently at or close to 100% usage or throttling at a way too high temperature.

It isn't that bad as it's only in certain situations. See video ->https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-qLDr8bG-I

I think I'll be fine for now, but I'm always thinking about future upgrades :D

Btw, I can OC to 4.2GHz on my H81, but I don't think it's supposed to be doing that. 4.3GHz on up will crash Windows.

No way a gtx1060 is stumped the a i5-4960. That cpu will handle a gtx1080 without issues.

There's several issues that are inherent to BF1. It's a ram hog, using @ 7Gb of ram, so unless you have 16Gb, you'll have low fps. Channels are important too, for those running ram in single channel, you can expect losses of @20fps just for that reason. While the i5 can handle a 1060 easily, the issue with BF1 is its optimization. It prefers 8 threads. You'll get smoother game play from an i7. Supposedly, nvidia is going to be releasing a patch/driver update to better optimize for 4 thread cpus. Dunno when or if this'll happen.

1 supposed fix is in nvidia control panel, 3d, change v-sync to fast, then turn off in game v-sync.
Another supposed fix is to play in DX11, may or may not have to get rid of GeForce Experience to do this.

You'd have to be a highly obsessed fan of this 1 particular game to be dropping @$250 on a used i7-4790k or adding another $150 for a decent Z97.

Some non-z boards support minor OC by using BCLK, but this can become an issue over @103.2 as the board doesn't have the power phases to maintain stability or very good voltage control through LLC and limited heatsinks on the VRM's and other voltage regulatory circuitry.

It's also quite possible you, like me, lost out in the cpu lottery. My 3570k is perfectly stable at 4.3GHz at 1.18v. At 4.4GHz at 1.45v it's still crashing on a mpower z77 that I can easily get 4.9GHz from my 3770k. So the option for buying a Z97 to match the 4690k may not be viable.

Still can't see how any single game performance levels would warrant spending $200 to change the cpu.. To change All games fps, sure, upgrade, buy a better gpu, but just to raise the fps on a single game? Sorry, but imho that's nuts. Chances are that in almost every other game you'll actually loose fps, especially single core performance games that benefit from higher core speeds capable by the i5, which don't use more than 4 threads mostly.

Yes of course. But I would factor in selling the 4690k. But even then, you are right. It's not that big of a deal.

I'm thinking of doing a ram upgrade if it will help in Battlefield 1... I haven't found any game make it absolutely necessary to upgrade my ram yet but this may be it. I currently have Corsair Dominator Platinum 8 GB 2400 Mhz and I may upgrade to the same kit in 16 GB.

I really do hope the high CPU usage can be addressed in a patch because there's no way I'm upgrading my only 1.5 year old rig for this!
