Do I Have To Follow The Lame RAM Compatibility List?

I've narrowed my motherboard search down to 2 boards (The ASUS X99-E-10G WS and Asus Rampage V Edition 10). If I go by the RAM compatibility PDF on the Asus website for lets say the X99-E-10G-WS not only will I be paying a huge amount more for RAM, the only DDR4-3333 kit they list for that mobo is a 16GB Cosair kit and I plan to install a 32GB kit which, if I go by their PDF, would force me to buy one specific Kingston kit at DDR4-3200.

Can't I just use pcpartpicker.com and be done with it? For instance: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Lgbkcf/gskill-memory-f43333c16d32gvk

Edit: Man look at the newegg price graph. The price of that sure went up.

X99 needs 4 x matched sticks to work in quad channel mode. You wouldn't buy Intel's high end platform and cripple it would you?

And no, you really don't have to follow the QVL.

Okay, so I should find a 4 stick kit then. So if later on I add 4 more I won't be in quad channel? How does that play out?

+1 If wanting 32GB go with a 4x8GB set, also keep in mind this will require an OC of the CPU, and probably voltage adjustment of the VCCSA (CPU wasn't mentioned)

Right but the RAM will still work before I overclock right? It just wont be utilizing that speed until I OC it?

There are 8 DIMMS on the board. Fill 4 of them and you have the quad channel the system supports. Either one bank of 4 or both sets of 4 will work. So 4 or 8 sticks are what you're looking for. I can't imagine needing more than 32GB in a nonworkstation.

You may get full speed by enabling XMP and not needing an overclock. It somewhat depends on the individual CPU and its IMC ( integrated memory controller ).

Yes when installed they will go tto the mobos default of 2133. Also I would suggest against going in planning to 'upgrade' the DRAM, go for the full amount you will want/need in a single package from the get-go. There are no guarantees when attempting to 'add' DRAM - I covered this a bit in my DRAM FAQs and Fiction article(s), look in Fictions, items 2 and 6

I've heard that bit too but I'm already over budget for this build, especially if I go with what I think I'm going to go with (The X99-E-10G WS rather than the Rampage V Edition 10). Plus because of my use case I went from originally thinking I'd start out with a GTX 1080 to now deciding on a Titan X Pascal. Anyway, 32 gigs is the least I want. If in the future I want to go to 64 I'll just sell my kit and get a new one or something. 32 gigs should be plenty for a while unless I can magically get 64 at a similar price and speed.
