Hello All.

A couple of GPU orientated questions. My setup at the moment is:

FX6300 @ 4.1 (Turbo mode for gaming through AMD Overdrive)
7870HD 2GB Gpu
M5A78L-M Motherboard
8gb RAM
750W PSU Dell H750E-01

I'm looking to purchase a GTX 1060 3GB.Now I've read that there is an issue of this CPU bottle necking this GPU @ stock. Would the use of the processor in turbo mode eliminate this? I play some CPU dependent games so I'm not looking to gain much performance from this. Its the GPU dependent games I'm looking to see some difference from my 7870, i.e Rise of the Tombraider, some FPS titles etc. Would I see an improvement whilst keeping my old CPU? Looking for steady 60's @ high or even ultra lets say.

The last question: If I needed an upgrade for my CPU (due to the bottle necking being so bad), could I instead buy a 1440p monitor and run games at a higher res so it works the GPU a bit more, not too fussed about lower FPS as long at its nearly a smooth 60. Or is that not the way this would work?

Any input would be most appreciated.

Solution
The FX 6300 will bottleneck the 1060, but you will still get a massive improvement in most games over the HD7870 you have. The 3GB of VRAM on the 1060 you want is barely enough for 1080p these days though, if you want to game at 1440p I'd at minimum get a 6GB version and preferably get a GTX 1070. Running at 1440p isn't going to make it bottleneck less as long as you're still shooting for 60fps. If you have the money to get a 1440p monitor I'd spend it on an i5 6500 and compatible motherboard first and get a better monitor later.

Much better option would be to get a monitor with low freesync range and RX480 gpu. Even if FX6300 bottlenecks, or game quality settings at 1440p are set to very high- freesync will make action fluid, and even if game drops to 30-35fps, it will simply feel like 45-50fps.

Thankyou chemma for your quick response. Cheers for the clarification on the bottleneck problem. Glad to see it will be an improvement nonetheless. I am just exploring the possibilities of 1440p atm as I don't have the necessary funds at the second for upgrading anything other than the GPU, just looking for insight. Never tried an Intel CPU always been with AMD as I've been very happy with their performance. But I guess a change won't hurt. Would the 6500 be enough without overclocking? As I'm not too keen on the OCing idea really if its outside of just pushing a button. Simple being i know.

Thanks

Yes, it's plenty without overclocking. It will be a lot faster than your 6300.

Sorry neblogai, I didn't see your response until I refreshed after writing a response myself. Ok I'll investigate that possibility of that. After buying the new GPU I will probably have about £250 to either spend on a new Mobo/CPU or a monitor like you say if freesync works that way.

Thanks

Freesync is pretty nice but any of the 1440p monitors that support it are usually pretty expensive. AOC makes a 144hz 1080p model that supports it and isn't that expensive, might be worth a look. AOC G2460PF is the model number. Otherwise I don't see the point of getting a 1440p monitor as the Dell P2420Q isn't that much more expensive and is 4k.

That is true, however I expect prices for them to get better in Black Friday- winter period, as this summer AU Optronics started mass production of 1440p panels with 144-200Hz range, and planned expanding into delivering other aspect ratios and DPI this and next quarter.

Thankyou both for your suggestions. Think i might end up going for the 6500 option as it is cheaper than getting a 1440p monitor for the second. Then after the upgrade to the Cpu and mobo ill go for a freesync monitor. Thanks again.
