Looking for some help, a couple of years ago, I bought a Gateway DX4870, running windows 7, and at that time using the onboard video with the stock bios P01.A1. In July of 2016, I upgraded to Windows 10, when Microsoft was pushing the free upgrade. Then in the last week, I started using the computer more, and my son wanted to play some higher end games on it... ...thus why I'm here. I cloned and swapped out the hard drive, for a solid state 250GB from Crucial using Acronis, and made the prior 1TB platter drive a long term storage solution for the backup images from a couple laptops in the house. Upgraded the RAM to 4x4GB for a total of 16GB, also from Crucial. So far so good, machine is rock'n and roll'n. Then I tried to upgrade the video card...
I purchased a Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX 750 TI, installed the drivers, installed the card, and realized this power supply doens't have a 6pin Pci power connector. One of those is now on order from Newegg and should be here in a couple of days. However, on booting up, no screen, not even the BIOS showed up. Digging into this, I figured maybe it's underpowered because of the 6pin power connector. Not trusting this to be the only issue after some of the things I've read about the BIOS, I yanked a card from another box, and dropped it in. Same issue. Back to Google, little more research, upgraded BIOS to initially what I thought was the latest version... same issue... more google... need to disable secure boot in Windows 10... my bios doesn't have secure boot... disabled quiet boot, that seems to have worked, and now either card will work...
...but here's the thing. It takes like three minutes to boot through bios and get to the windows start screen? I know very little about BIOS, but the version I have from Gateway.com is P01.A2, and it's 2.9MB, I tried loading the P11.B1, which is 3.3MB, and labled as UEFI for Windows 8(not for upgrades) but it says it's too large to fit on my BIOS chip and won't load by running the American Megatrends exe from the desktop. Should I try another method to force it in?
Am I on the right track? Am I venturing into replacing the BIOS chip, or is there another solution? The motherboard is an ACER IPIMB-AR rev:1.02a, mfg date 2012/05/07, and yeah, that's a joy to try and find support for too..
