hey there !

i have this cabinet http://

It has 3 led fans in it out of which 2 are connected to the PSU and one is to the motherboard.
All the three fans have just two wires each.

I want to add a switch in front for controlling purpose, so that when i go to sleep after keeping the CPU on for downloading stuff, i can switch off the LED fans so that my house doesn't glow like a Christmas tree.

Will it cause any harm if i add a switch?
I have this kinda switch already lying in my house.

You should never turn off every fan while the computer is running. ever. You'll end up overheating your components and will be without a computer.

If you know how to wire it up properly, I don't see how it could cause any harm. - However I wouldn't disconnect the one from the MOBO as a lot of the time a fan is required to be connected to even start your computer. If you're going to use the switches I recommend soldering the wires to the switches themselves, and to make sure no exposed wire touches any bare metal on your case as it could short various components, or worse.

A way better alternative is to pick up a cheap fan controller which can function just the same, and could save you a headache in the long run - Although If you're really feeling up for the project I see no issue with going ahead with it.

Here's a fan controller on newegg for $10 to give you an idea.

yeah definitely a fan controller is just so much easier to work with. my only concern is if the one is the cpu fan? dont turn that off. then as long as your rig has reasonable air space around it, passive cooling should be fine if all you're doing is downloading stuff.

conversely, you could just switch in non LED fans.

did it today in the morning.
removed the exhaust fan from the mobo and connected it to the PSU , added the switch between the ground wire ( taking it as a common for all the 3 ) and leaving the other wires intact to the PSU, now m controlling all the 3 LED fans with a single switch,

Now i can sleep in peace ! cheers

thanks for the quick response though

My cabinet has enough room for heat dissipation and also i turnoff the fans only when downloading stuffs at night not while using it and just in case if u need it i was talking about the cabinet fans, not the CPU fan

Do you at least have the CPU fan on at all times? CPU's can be the temperature hot enough to fry an egg in a matter of seconds, even while just downloading. If you're turning off all fans, i recommend at least to keep that one on.

Edit: just read your edit.
