How do I know what RAM is compatible with my motherboard?

I bought a PC pre built 2 years ago and I've been upgrading it ever since. I've gone from a gtx 660 2gb gpu to an Asus Strix GTX 970 4gb gpu. AMD FX 6300 cpu to a Intel i7 4790 cpu. Unknown mobo to GA-b85m-d3h and an unknown psu to 750W COOLER MASTER V-series Semi-Modular PSU. So I guess I can say my PC is pretty good. However battlefield 1 runs like crap once I get past the first game per gaming session due to my 8gb ddr3 RAM (8gb is the minimum but 16 is recommended), so I was considering replacing my RAM with 16gb ddr3 but I have a few questions about that

1) How do I know what RAM is compatible with my motherboard?
2) After I insert the sticks into the RAM slots is there anything I have to do on my PC afterwards? Will it run properly when I hit the power button?

Thanks for any good feedback :) I was considering the 8GB G.SKILL RipjawsX 1600MHz DDR3 Ram, just wasn't sure if it would work with my mobo.

Solution
1) Motherboard specs will state what RAM modules are compatible.
2) Nothing else should be required. Just power on the system and it should be working just fine.
