Recently, my DVD/CD drive has stopped reading or writing discs. I thought the problem was with the latest WINDOWS 10 update (October 2016) because that's when the problem started but now, i don't know. I ran a diagnostics test on the drive & the test came back with a FAIL result. When i initially installed WINDOWS 10 months ago, the drive stopped working until i was told by TOSHIBA (my laptop brand) to uninstall TOSHIBA MEDIA CREATOR & another program i can't remember & the problem was fixed. Are any others having this issue after this latest WINDOWS 10 update or could it just be a problem with my drive needing to be taken in & repaired?

Try to remember what that other program was and make sure it and the media creator didnt automatically get downloaded again

If youre sure they arent installed:

Go to the start menu and type device manager
Find your DVD drive in that list under DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Right click it and click Update drivers, if it says they are up to date, right click and uninstall the drivers

After they are uninstalled the drive will move to a new area of the device manager list, so keep track of what was there to find it again
Right click it and click install drivers, let it find the drivers automatically (or just restart after the drivers are uninstalled, windows should try to install the drivers automatically once it boots)

More info on how to do this here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/ad5a063e-5f57-c715-2566-b983195752c1/update-drivers-in-windows-10

Once the drivers are installed try using it again, if there is no change you can try uninstalling the drivers again, but this time manually select the drivers from a list, just go in order down the list, install the dvd drivers, uninstall if it doesnt work, repeat until it does work or until you run out of drivers to try

If nothing works then the drive really is faulty and youll need a new one, if its still in warranty it would be easier to not bother with any of this and just give it to them to fix for you

Uninstalling & then re-installing didn't work & none of the two programs I deleted to fix the earlier problem were not downloaded again. The troubleshooter says it's working properly & the device manager says the driver is up to date.
