hello guys

i have an i5 2500k with a stock cooler that i want to replace with an evo 212

my problem is i cant find any thermal paste where i live and ordering one online will take atleast 2 weeks / 1 month

i saw this guy in youtube who created his own thermal paste out of toothpaste mix with Vaseline

here is a link if any 1 is interested
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmgI_TX9-Wg

the video is not in english but the whole idea is about mixing toothpaste and Vaseline with a spoon then applying it on the processor

these are some pictures of the video

i am really scared of using his methods would any one recommend it ?

Your best bet is to wait... some months ago in a thermal paste comparison they add toothpaste and hey it worked¡¡¡ ... with a delta of 43 and 48 degrees... more than 15 degrees from a proper one.

Not to talk of how much time it would work before degrades and melts....

Anyway i would never do it on my own system, even if it means wait half a year i prefer that before seeing my system burn.

I watched the video. Even any kind of thermal compound (?) is better than no thermal compound. However, I do not recommend untested and unproven compounds. Do not go this route.

I have read many threads where poor performance resulted from poorly applying good thermal compound. The proper application of a good thermal compound is mandatory. You are better off ordering a good thermal compound and waiting for it to arrive.

Good luck!

i was kinda sure it wouldn't work :/

would you recommend any alternatives to use as thermal paste ?

The evo 212 will come with a tube of paste.
If you are buying used without the paste, then you really should buy something made for the purpose.
Even if it takes a month to get to you.
I would keep the stock cooler until you get the right stuff.
A tube of paste is cheap. Most any will do.

One problem with alternative paste is that it will not last. Vaseline and other such will, over time disappear.
But, for temporary, you are ok. I would not try; the stock cooler will continue do the job until then.
Smooth peanut butter might work also.
A cpu will slow down or shut off to protect itself if it gets too hot.

The still photos shows the application of heavy amounts of paste; that is wrong.
The purpose of paste is to fill in microscopic air pits in the mating surfaces.
A small drop will spread under heat and pressure.

Whatever you try, check the temperatures at idle.
They should normally be 10-15c. over ambient.
If it seems too much more than this, try again.

Do not use anything that isn't actual thermal compound. Anyone who says they can use things like peanut butter, toothpaste, or vaseline is stupid, clueless, or both. If it doesn't have a metal conduit, it isn't thermal compound and should never be used on a CPU. Unless that is, you like watching things catch fire.
