AMD Athlon or phenom??

Hey guys, I am about to build another budget gaming PC, and I was wondering which on is better, the AMD athlon x4 845 (quad core, 3.8ghz) or the AMD phenom II 940 (quad core, 3.0ghz). My motherboard is the asrock 980DE3/U3S3, 8gb of ram and my graphics card is the Zotac GeForce GTX 750 ti 2gb. All help appreciated!

Technically, only the Phenom will work with that motherboard. The Athlon chip you listed is a Socket FM2+ chip, while your motherboard is a Socket AM3+ board.

However, the Phenom chip you mentioned is far from the best option for that board:

Your board can go all the way up to the FX-8350/8370 chips, which would be much better choices for that board.
