Questions about upgrading my pc

I am thinking about upgrading my pc and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on what I should do. Im either thinking about upgrading the GPU or just buy a new pc as a whole my specs are as follows

ram 16GB 1600mhz
power 650W
motherboard ASUS Sabertooth R.2,0
GPU geforce gtx 760 2gb
processor AMD FX(tm)-8350 eight-core
mid tower
ssd 250 and HDD 1TB

In my opinion this has been great for the past 3-4 years and I still can run almost everything on high but with the new games coming out BF1 for example im starting to only be able to play on low. I just feel if I upgrade the GPU I will eventually have to upgrade everything else but all opinions are welcome. If anyone has any suggestions on parts I would appreciate any feedback to my options.

Well... if you have a 144 Hz display, then the GTX 1070 will not be overkill. The CPU might be the weak link tho. Still, I'd give it a try before upgrading to a new platform. What have you got to loose? You'll still want the card even if you change to Intel. But if you go Intel, go with an i7. The i5 lineup may not do the job with the 1070 at 144Hz...

If you have 900-$1200 bucks to shell out whenever you want you could get a great i5 6600k + NVIDA 10xx card and be happy with the results.

I would get a nice video card now if you're not quite financially ready for the next PC. Might bottleneck for now but then I'd get a nice kaby / zen CPU sometime next year. A GTX 1060 or RX 480 would be nice for a sub $1000 PC I think.

i would wait see if there any good black friday sales on cpu and mb. if not wait and buy new gpu and intel cpu/mb. newer kurby lake and 200 ser mb dropping at the end of the year. if you go beond the end of the year keep an eye out as april time is when newer gpu from both amd and nvidia may be dropping with newer hba memory.

yeah I have about 2000$ set off to the side for any pc upgrades and TBH I could buy a whole new one with the 2k but I also could save money but just buying a new GPU. Im thinking of just waiting maybe till next year for new card/cpus

yeah I have money set aside for a new pc I just dont want to use it if its not necessary and I might just wait till next year to buy a new pc or like you said during the holidays thanks for the advice!

Agreed that you certainly can give your current computer a good GPU upgrade now, and upgrade CPU/Motherbaord in the future. Might as well wait till the end of the year for AMD Zen and see how they stack up.

For now, I would go with a GTX 1060 or 1070. The 1070 will certainly bottleneck but still be better then the 1060 and the 1070 can be fully unleashed when you do your CPU/Mobo upgrade in the future.

A bit overkill if you game at 1080p/60 Hz. But fine if you see a higher rez, faster refresh display in your future. The 1060 will max out settings in any game at 60 fps (which is all that is practical at 60 Hz v. refresh)

I do have a 144hz monitor so I can deff run a higher refresh rate. Im really just concerned about the CPU not being able to handle next gen games for the years to come so I guess the next question I should ask is how long do you think my current CPU will hand games in the future? if its under 2 years i might aswell wait for new components coming out and maybe get a new pc

But as games become more and more multi-threaded, the aging FX-8350 8-core will be able to regain some gaming performance.

sounds good ! do you have any recommendations for i.7 for a setup with a gtx 1070?

Take the video with a "grain of salt" as they used to say. There are some "ifs" and exceptions in the monologue. But it does show the limits in the quad core at 144/155 Hz with today's games. And it does show the benefit of the hyper-threaded i7 over the i5.
