Hi there Adithya_5,

That is really unpleasant. :(

I just want to start with that your safest bet for recovering the data would be to contact a data recovery company. You can contact WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=JVgeR6

Do you have a spare USB cable? I think it would be nice to attach the drive with another USB cable to a different USB port or even computer. That way, we can see if this is some sort of a connection related issue.

Also, you can go to Disk Management and see whether and how is the drive recognized over there: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CpAxlf
If it has damaged partitions/file system, you will need to use a data recovery tool.
After that, you can run both...

After that, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on it, so you can check the drive's health status out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ohOZYe

Is the drive under warranty?

Let me know how this goes,

The fact that the device is not recognized by Disk Management but it is by Device Manager, could indicate that only the enclosure is recognized but not the HDD inside.
If we assume that the cable is working fine (I do believe it would be nice to try another cable), this could be caused by faulty enclosure or a dead drive. In both cases, you have a couple of options:
- Look for some professional help, in case the data is really important.
- Contact the place you got the drive from or our Support and RMA it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=wWQIzw
In the second case, you will not get your data back though.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
D_Know_WD :)

If the drive is not recognized by the brand specific tool, then I believe you will not be able to access it with other software tools as well. This, leaves you with the two options, I've already mentioned.

One last thing you can try is to see if the drive would be recognized under Ubuntu. You will need a flash drive or a CD, so you can boot from it (don't install it, just boot). Thread on that: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Cheers,

All of you having trouble with your passport ultra as I have may find this solution to be the answer as I did. I have worked app. three days on and off trying various fixes including restore image two or three times installing drivers, etc. The fix for me was to go into bios and under usb controller tick no boot. By the way, I have a Dell Dude.
