Replaced my Radeon 6790 with GTX 1070 on my MSI 970a-g45 motherboard (850w PSU) and it won't post anything and won't even go to BIOS. Cleared CMOS, and plugged/unplugged Hard Drives and everything else with no luck. Finally put 6790 back in and it posted - but 6790 is broken/won't display screen past startup. Called EVGA and they said my motherboard was a few years old and might not be compatiable with 1070, but I could try updating BIOS and see if it worked, if not I would need new motherboard. Now can't update BIOS because of broken old gpu to see if that's the issue.

Anyone have any ideas on the issue? Or a solution besides borrowing someone's gpu or buying a new motherboard ?

Solution
Very likely you need to update your BIOS, starting from the R7-260 / GTX 750 most mobos needed a bios update to properly recognize the new GPUs.

So yes, try to get borrowed a gpu your mobo can recognize and update your BIOS with it.
