Hi,

I have an acer aspire xc-605 desktop and I want to upgrade my videocard to nvidea gtx 1050. How do I know if my mobo can run it? My current videocard is AMD radeon hd 8470.

Here is a pic of my motherboard:

I also know that my case is too small so I'll be replacing it and move everything from my current to the new. I might also replace power supply if the current one can't run gtx 1050.

Solution

1. the card will run on your motherboard maybe not at its full capacity but it will run as it will down grade its speed to the PCIex16v2 from v3bus speed, the memory the video card uses is not relevant to what your motherboard is.

2. when you get a new case, you will need a new power supply as well get a motherboard stud kit (what the board mounts in a case if one is not...

two things

the motherboard has a pcie slot

and the power supply is good enough to power it

you are also limited by your small case, so make sure to measure the space for max gpu length
by the looks of it you can only have a single slot low profile gpu

It has one PCI Express x16 but version 2.0 while gtx 1050 is 3.0. Will there be a problem? So is gddr5 compatible as long as there is a pcie slot?

No problem on the case and power supply as I am willing to get a new case and power supply. I can just move everything from my old case to new one right? Then get the gtx 1050 and everything is set to go?

2. when you get a new case, you will need a new power supply as well get a motherboard stud kit (what the board mounts in a case if one is not provided with new case) as your "acer" board may not be a typical size on the market (I have encountered this withy Dell and HP models doing case migrations like you speaking of doing) you may find your SATA cable in the acer case are too short to use in your new case, another thing to get purchased (details details)...

Thank you. So would it be better if I just get a 2.0 video card instead of the gtx 1050? Can you suggest some for me please? My budget is in the $150-200 range.

You could get a Mini ITX 1050 variant when it comes out, or a mini itx GTX 1060, which is $200. Or, you can go for the smaller variants of the RX 460, if applicable. Good luck!
