DVD drive working fine but won't recognise new DVD-R discs

The DVD drive in my laptop is working fine and writes and plays no problem but I have just bought some blank DVD-R discs and the drive can't see them. Asks me to insert disc. Told supplier but no joy.

Ok so it is a newer laptop. Not like in the old days where not all DVD burners did + and - R disk. I would though try a +R disk if you can find one just to see because you never know.
