assuming you have windows, the quickest way to "clear" a hard drive from previous OS etc. and start over would be to basically what you said.
1. get it connected to the desktop

2. Assuming you are just wanting the extra drive as extra space on your pc.

Run (assuming windows 7 or 10 here) "computer management", under storage on the left side, you will see disk management , now be careful to identify the right hard drive your trying to clear, one bad move and you wipe the wrong one , its not recoverable.
Look at names you will see the drive letters, once you have identified the drive you want to "wipe" you right click on the partitions you need to clear up and "delete volume" once you have no volumes on it, right click on it again on the unallocated partition, and select new simple volume, once the wizard is done it will format the partition and will assign a drive letter to the drive., it can be used now as a secondary drive

3. assuming you want to use that SSD to become your primary drive and migrate you current OS/files to the new SSD to use as primary drive : well that all depends on sizes of drives first of all, and in most cases easier (unless both drives are equal or new ssd bigger than current drive in size) to reinstall windows on new SSD and simply clean up the "documents off old hard drive and wipe that HDD and reinstall games/apps on it.
