4790k core is fluctuating to as high as 122C on idle! Is this possible?

Hello!

I noticed some weird lag and load times in some games recently so I decided to check my temps. It turns out, Temperature #3 is idling at up to 123C? Everything is seated properly and the issues I have are minor. This isn't normal, right?

I am cooling it with the hyper 212 EVO, but it seems like maybe that isn;'t the issue considering the other cores are idling at around 40-50

I'm not sure which program you're using to monitor temps. Temp#3 though almost never references the cpu core temps. It's highly possible that the sensor is faulty or the program is attempting to read a sensor that isn't there so it's returning a false value. Cpu temps are typically listed in order, core 0, core 1, core 2, core 3 etc. Not just temp#.

Try downloading realtemp and see what it says, it's usually pretty accurate. The cpu won't reach 122c, throttle temp is around 105c and at that point it will reduce cpu speed to prevent overheating damage (the kind that would happen if it reached 122c). Different programs such as hwinfo, hwmonitor, aida64 etc have different things they report using the various temp labels. It can also vary...

Just tested it with Battlefield 1 on ultra settings with hardware monitor in my second monitor. All the cores in game are between 47-42C but temp 3 is around 51. When I alt-tab out and have it in the background, though, temp #3 stays at around 90-120C? Any idea what ould cause this?

It can also vary from one motherboard to another, it's how the board and software match up to give accurate readings.
