Thinking about switching from AMD to Intel.

What am I really to expect?

I've decided on components (MB/CPU) but will I have to wipe my SSD if I was going to reinstall Win7?

Solution
Always go new tech if buying new.
I suggest I5-6600K and plan to overclock.
It will perform about the same in gaming as a I7-6700K and be somewhat cheaper.
You will need a Z170 motherboard to overclock. Any will do.
Skylake needs low voltage ddr3, 1.35v. Unlikely your ddr3 will work.
You will want ddr4, 2133 speed is fine.

Sometimes, your old windows C drive will boot to a new motherboard.
If so, you task is easy, you only need to install the new drivers that come with your motherboard.
There are some things you can do to prepare for such a change; google is your friend there
Here is one, for example:

If you need to do a clean install, your...
What are your old/new parts?
Have you bought already? we might have some suggestions.

To answer your question, on a clean install, you will be given the option to reformat your ssd.

If you are changing to skylake, there is a potential problem.
USB devices need a driver to run. If you plan on using a USB attached dvd, it will not work because windows 7 does not have the newer drivers.
The solution is simple; buy a sata attached dvd drive and use that to do the install.

I'll try answer all questions in this thread at once.

I use my PC for gaming and some light web browsing.

The parts im going to keep are..
8GB DDR3 RAM
CPU Cooler
GTX 1060 6GB
SDD
PSU

Parts I want to buy are..
CPU - thinking of getting a 4790k or 6700K, leaning more towards 6700k at the minute.
MB - I've looked at some motherboards however haven't decided - if you guys could suggest ones for the 6700k then that would be awesome. From £70-130 would be nice!

I have W7 Disc and a SATA DVD drive so Im all set for that and I've backed up my C:Drive to an external HDD.

Govern that I've backed up my data, when I switch can I install OS as fresh then restore from backup? This is my only concern besides all the components :)

If you need to do a clean install, your old apps that used the registry will need to be reinstalled.

Then, there may be an issue if your windows copy was OEM.
That makes it tied to your original motherboard.
MS is lenient on letting you reactivate though it might require phone activation.

If all else fails, you can buy a new license.

Thanks, thats very useful.

And If I dont plan to OC and go with the 6700k? What MB would you suggest? :)

If you do not OC a I7-6700K, it will run at 4.0 stock.
You need only a H110 based motherboard.
But, I recommend a Z170 based motherboard, regardless.
The "K" series are designed to be overclocked. It is as simple as just raising the multiplier from the default 40 to a higher number. You need not do so initially, but you want to keep the option.
As of 5/2016
What percent can get an overclock at a somewhat sane 1.40v Vcore.

I7-6700K
4.9 2%
4.8 17%
4.7 59%
4.6 93%
4.5 100%
