Overclocking raise FPS but drop framerate consistency

Basically I have a 1080 GTX FTW EVGA. Every time I OC the card, I gain more FPS, but the FPS jump more and the overall result is not a smooth experience even near 60 FPS.

Basically, the games run better than when OC. Any idea what might be the issue or is it even normal at all? Games tend to crash way more to even if benches are stable.

If you really wanna get better FPS in most NEW games, mostly DX12, i'l recommend to wait until ZEN, or buy FX 9590. For old games, don't buy FX, wait for Zen, it will have a huge increase of fps!
Sorry to say, but there is no CPU capable of always keeping up. Some games are more CPU demanding than others. It's as simple as that.

That said, you could be running into heat throttling. Check the temps while running the games. It could also simply be that the game has some CPU bottlenecking, so your minimums may be the same, while the maximums have increased. Perhaps the card isn't as stable as you realize.

You should monitor your cards clocks and thermals, as well as the CPU during the games and see if you notice anything unusual.

Sorry to say, but CPU, especially at 4k, have barely any impact over the result in many games especially that nowaday, these games are developed mainly toward GPU render due to consoles.

Upgrading my CPU or OC it will have barely any impact over the 3% margin which is insignificant.

As for power, I have a 1000W platinum power supply that was feeding double 290x in crossfire... I think it can handle a single 1080 GTX.

Temps are at max 64C because I make the fan goes at 100% around 60C when OC. And I also have a full tower with optimal airflow and 7 fans. Cooling is not an issue.

Issue here is even if I am playing a game with higher FPS, the framerate get choppy. When I don't OC my card, FPS is barely lower, however the framerate is smooth. I will check something and post again soon.

I was giving ideas, and the reality of a few things you got wrong. Even at 4K, there are some games which will be CPU limited. I won't say all games, even most games, but you play multiplayer ARMA, DayZ, WoW, Neverwinter Nights, and so on, and you will be CPU limited often, even at 4K. That is why I asked you the game.

As far as the heat goes, that's good, but did you monitor the clocks?

What games are you having troubles with? There are a few games which do not like higher than 60 FPS.

What were your FPS prior, and what are they now? If you are using V-sync in some games (using double buffer system), you might be going from 30 FPS pretty solid, to it bouncing between 30 and 60 FPS, and that might feel worse.

Did you run 3dmark Timespy? What's the link to your results, they might show something interesting, as they compare your scores to others with similar systems.

Have you updated your drivers recently? If not, do so. If you have, try rolling back.

As far as having a 3% increase with an OC on the CPU...that suggests you may/are CPU bound at times.

Found my issue, EVGA Precision software is having a power tab on the left side that you need to raise. It did the trick and force the card to run in boost mode without hiccups.

Also, a 4770k is able to handle a single card easily, however multi-gpu configs really benefit from CPU OC because the amount of data to queue and sync is such that it demand more calculating power from the CPU. There, your cpu can be bound, however if my cpu is already providing more then what the GPU can provide, then OC your cpu will result in barely minimal gain.

I am in this situation.

Good info there.
