Computer idle RAM increasing and performance dropping like a brick

Hey everyone, hoping someone here is able to help me, because I'm quite frankly running out of ideas on what to do.
So just the other day, I noticed my computer took a substantial hit to it's performance. It gave me some slight concern, but it had been on all day the previous day, and there'd been no changes, so I figured it just needed a restart. Found out the next day when it didn't solve my problem, that my idle RAM was sitting at around 2GB, with only task manager and Discord up. (Even with Discord down, it barely dropped) Now today with the exact same things open, I'm noticing some processes taking up far more RAM than they ever have in the past, and my idle RAM is at around 3.5GB. By this point I feel cause for some rather major alarm. On top of that, having other issues that I feel prove something is very wrong, and it's not just me having something like Discord up.
The day before the issues started, I was able to run Pixelmon (a Minecraft mod. Sue me, I game) which is very demanding, with about 4GB dedicated to it, with Firefox up with several tabs, including Discord, and it would take between an hour and an hour and a half before I'd have to restart the game to reset the RAM usage so I wouldn't lag out my entire computer.
Now though, I can have it up for only around 10 - 12 minutes before it starts to lag my system out, and that's without Firefox running, or any other large processes. Considering the drastic change, I'm pretty sure something is wrong.
Heck, Firefox and Discord being the only things I really have running, even then Firefox (which is normally plenty speedy and takes a lot to freeze up badly) is having a lot of hiccups and freezes.
I've tried to do everything I can so far, besides running a virus scan, since I don't really have any software for it right now, or the money to get anything with decent quality.
Checked and only had 1% disk defragmentation. There's no new programs that been installed on the day of the problems start, or the days before. I'm no idiot, so I haven't downloaded anything that I'm not 100% sure is legitimate and safe. Updated my graphics card drivers. At this point I just can't think of anything else that could solve the issue, or explain it. Anyone here think they could lend me a hand? Feel free to request any more information that could be useful to solve the issue.

I should also probably note that Explorer has been giving me the middle finger as well, and freezes up every time I try to right click a program to select more options.

*Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970, MSI 100ME edition. (At least it's an upgrade from the standard junk that came with this thing.)
*PSU: XFX XTR 750W 80+ Gold (I believe at the time of getting this, it was in the Tier 2 PSU list.)
*RAM: 6GB DDR2 (It's a 2010 model computer.)

Ugh, lovely. As for how old my HDD is, if you look at what I wrote, it's a 2010 model computer, so it's 6, and almost 7, years old. I can't imagine that would cause such severe performance issues though so randomly. The computer until about a year ago was my grandmother's, and she never really used it at all, so it mostly lay dormant with very infrequent use, which means very little stress put for years on the hardware.
