I just upgraded from a gtx 960 to a RX 480 msi
I installed all new drivers and etc.
This card doesn't look any better than my old gtx 960, if anything it seems like the 960 was better....

Waste of money. You didn't need to buy that amd video card , it's about the same price and it gives you only 10 - 15 fps + ...
If you had that money buy now you could have get an 980 ti. But ya.. try to reinstall the windows (don't forget to backup).

Someone on this forum said to get a 480.

The R9 380 beats a 960... nevermind an RX 480... the card isn't a waste of money, that's like saying upgrading from a 960 to a 1060 is a waste of money. The 1060 and 480 are essentially on the same par. 480 still loses in DX11, but DX12 allows it to catch up.
"If you had that money buy now you could have get an 980Ti"
-Second hand off eBay, maybe, and NOT for $200-250. Most 980Tis on eBay are closing off at around $350-400. Don't spread false info please.

@Nate, what's the rest of your rig look like?

It is not overclocked.
I currently only tested it out on minecraft. But it lost a lot of FPS
I will track the temps right now

Minecraft unless you're running shaders+optifine shouldn't be GPU bound, regardless of the GPU you have (yknow, unless it's an incredibly old gpu...). Should be CPU bound. So, you installed all the new drivers... Did you uninstall all the old ones as well? What happens when you go play a GPU heavy title?

I am always most of the time running optifine.
It's a new GPU.
All drivers have been deleted and reinstalled new ones.
I'll go test out a gpu heavy.

Well that's just my opinion , i was saying if he had the money from the 960 and from the 480 now he could get a much better card.

The 960 launched almost two years ago at this point... I mean, yeah you could do that but that's not how the world works... I'm not going to walk 30 miles a day to work/school/etc. to save up for a BMW. I'd buy a car that suits my needs. Along the same context... Wouldn't play games off of an incapable/nonexistent GPU if there was money for one at the time. Neither the 960 or 480 are bad cards, I don't understand your gripe.

Optifine shouldn't be stressing it that much, it should still be CPU bound. Optifine stresses it out a bit more, but not exactly a lot. There's also the caveat that I'm not 100% sure how AMD GPUs do with modded things as they come out of the community. Optifine is a fairly large one, but I have no idea if it works better with NV or AMD.
As for ARK... What are your CPU and GPU usages sitting at while in game?

I honestly don't know how to check GPU usage.

I'd try a non gaming benchmark first, something like Firestrike. This is to get a score that allows you to compare with other people who have the same or similar CPU/GPU combo. The idea is to make sure everything is working right before you start testing it on games. Next, when you do test on games try to use a game with a built in benchmark. This will give you more accurate results when comparing the 960 to the 480. It's too easy to say "it feels slower" when you aren't using hard numbers but instead are just eyeballing it.

Last but not least, anything CPU dependent isn't going to improve in performance that much if at all. That's because the 960 is powerful enough that simply replacing it with a 480 isn't going to compensate for an underpowered CPU.

I know it doesn't just "feel slower" thats not what i'm saying i lost about 300 fps.

Download MSI Afterburner, it has a graphical display detailing a load of things, two (I guess technically 9-10) of which are your CPU usage(s) and GPU usage. Download that, give it a whirl on whatever you're attempting to play and look at specifically--which cores of your CPU are getting stressed, and if they are hitting 100%. If any single core is getting close to/is at 100%, it's an issue with the CPU binding your FPS. If the GPU usage is hitting 100%, it's an issue with your GPU.
