I have an Intel Core2 Quad Q9550, I have DDR3 1333 ram, and I'm currently running an Asus P5G41T-M LX mobo... Is there better? I want to stay with Asus for the mobo. The intent is gaming, and upgrading, I'm looking for ATX. My main rig is an AMD build (Phenom II x6 1090T, Asus STRIX R9 380 4GB, Asus M4A79XTD EVO -> M5A99FX PRO R2.0)

P45 was the best of the Core2 chipsets. You may find one on ebay but since Core2 has been obsolete and out of production for about 8 years now used is your only option.

Get an i3 6100, a cheap LGA 1151 board and 8GB of DDR4 2133 and it will run circles around that Core2 for around $200 new.

Thanks! Any particular model, a quick search gave me the P5Q. The specs say DDR2, I'm looking for DDR3 support. I'll also look into your advice, but I'm more an AMD fan, most of my upgrade funds will go to my AMD rig. The Intel rig isn't bad at all, I'm just curious how much further I can take it, hardware wise.

By best I mean most stable long term overclocker. I would not spend money on a Core2 system unless it's broken and you don't have the budget to upgrade it.

AMD has not been able to compete with Intel since the release of Core2. In recent years the disparity has grown. Literally the 8 core AMD FX 8350 is beaten in gaming by the dual core ( with Hyperthreading ) i3 6100 in almost every benchmark.

Oh and Core2 works best with DDR2. DDR3 support was only added to the later Core2 boards because DDR3 was new at the time and DDR2 was on its way out. Core2 works best with a 1:1 FSB/RAM speed ratio. So DDR2 667 and 800 are the best choices. The memory controller just isn't advanced enough to use the DDR3 for performance gains.

Appreciate again, overclocking isn't something I'm looking for. After checking prices I'll be looking into newer hardware, as far as the current rig I'll keep looking. I like to keep my rigs going as long as I can. I still use an old Shuttle XPC SB83G5, I use it to capture console game play. P4 660, 2GB DDR 3200, Radeon HD 5450.
