So i play on a basic 1080 60hz monitor and I'm planning on getting the 1070 8gb because when destiny hits PC I want to be able to play that on high settings. But I've heard that if I'm not playing on 144hz or a higher resolution I should just get a 1060? I don't need overpowered card if I'm not taking full advantage of it. I also would like the card to last 5 years or longer before needing an upgrade. Would a 1060 6gb meet my current needs or should I drop an extra $100 for the overpowered 1070? I probably won't upgrade to a 144hz moniter and don't really care about getting full 60fps on ultra settings. It's more about not having to upgrade the card in a year if a new game comes out. Which card suits me more?

On high it probably can, but not ultra, it hits 60-70 fps on ultra at 1080p for most games released this year, so expect it to hit 40-50 fps with the same settings in a couple years time for the games released then

45 fps is still playable though, or just lower it to high for 60 fps again

It all depends on how you use the GPU and when you are pleased with certain graphics settings. You mention that you want to keep your GPU for 5 years or longer. That's a long while in tech-terms and the GPU might be outdated by 3-4 years. That's why I hate focussing on the future, because you can't predict how well a certain item/product will perform in that time.

The answer is actually quite simple though:
Now? GTX 1060
In 2-3 years (or maybe more)? GTX 1070

Both will be outdated in 5 years time.

It's best to just focus on NOW, and what performs and costs best for you NOW.

Maybe I should clarify what I mean by not needing to upgrade. If in 3 years they come out with a new elder scrolls or a new GTA I want my gpu to be able run it on high with ease. My buddy has a 680 and it still runs anything he throws at it on high or ultra. So in that event would a 1060 still be able to run it or will it be unable to handle a newer game in 4 years?
