Is his HDD dead?

My friend's PC crashed on him the other day and now it is in a loop of restarting and going to the windows recovery options. We want to eliminate the boot hard drive as the cause of the issue so he has plugged it into my PC. I've ran the error checking (right clicking, properties, tools, error checking) and have found nothing. I've also checked for viruses, is there anything else I can do to eliminate the boot HDD as the problem to this issue?

It loads into safe mode fine, I presume it's probably an OS thing.
But do you need the disc for doing a roll back? He has the disk at home ( I think ) but won't be able to get it till the weekend.

You can test it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Look for pending/reallocated/uncorrectable sectors.
If there are some, then it may be a good idea to back up the data stored on the drive.

I think it may be a good idea to see if a start up repair would help. (when attached to your friend's computer) He/she has an OS CD right?

For some reason we didn't check the system restore point, we assumed you needed the OS disk. We're now going through the process of restoring to a previous point! I'll let you know how it get on, thanks for the help so far.
