Removing motherboard PS/2 Keyboard and mouse ports

Hi Guys!

I'm currently building a small project computer with a custom case and custom I/O shield, my question is can I simply desoulder the PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard port on the motherboard and remove it as it's currently obstructing my plans!!

Any help would be great thanks,

As far as I see, if you manage to desolder them without breaking other parts of the motherboard, it should work as expected.
PS/2 ports wouldn't exist anymore but.. it should still work fine with USB.

Before you do that though, you should check that the computer can boot and work with usb keyboard/mouse just in case.
Also check if you can disable them in BIOS, I am pretty sure that some older boards allowed that.
If for no other reason than to remove ghost devices that wont really exist.

Do you have the proper desoldering tools? That little vacuum sucker thingy? If you desolder it, pull off the connector, there may still be traces of solder through the PCB causing a short. This would be bad.

Yes I have all the correct tools and capable of removing the component safely, I just did not know if the motherboard would look for the port and refuse to boot without it. I will check the BIOS and make sure the USB keyboard and mouse works correctly. The board has a UEFI Bios so its newer with more features.

Like little_me said, your BIOS should allow you to disable the port, and if you can safely get all the solder out, I'd go for it. I have several little motherboards around running various things that have the PS2 ports, and I haven't used a PS2 keyboard in about 4 years now.

The answer would be same as with ps/2 ports in other thread. if you can get the port out without damaging the motherboard, it should work just fine.
