Hey all so I built a pc and it runs like a beast specs are
Asus rampage iv motherboard
I7 3930k 3.2ghz CPU
Gtx 1080 strix gpu
32gb rip jaws ram
1200w psu
Acer predator x34

So I was getting 80fps on bf1 all maxed out at 3400x1300 and wanted to clock my CPU to c if I could get more performance, I have the asus AISUITE which I can over clock with a click of a button and it says 4.2ghz recommended so I set it to that upon reboot it powers up and shuts down instantly and does this over and over until I press the cmos button. I have never over clocked before so that's why I use the program that does it for u at recommended settings, have also tried in the bios setting it to oc game mode and same issue.
I assume it's shutting down coz the CPU can't handle it? Or it instantly gets hot? It's not wstercooled just a thermaltake big heat sink
Any tips would be muchky appreciated

I'd overclock the right way to be honest ; it's not something you wanna one-click and done with. It requires a lotta sitting around and rebooting but it's well worth it if you need the extra power.

There are more elaborate guides and I have not overclocked Intel since DDR3 ram has come out. But generally you do

-Raise the multiplier as high as possible until it is unstable. Bring it down to stable.
-Raise the multiplier and voltage by small increments.
-Find the harmony of stability ; not too hot, not too much voltage, not too little voltage, performing well, no throttling.
I NEVER use automatic tuning ; it's a great way to wreck your CPU.

What likely happened is your CPU had it's voltage turned up FAR too low, or another setting that totally screwed the system over like FSB raised beyond stability, etc.

Is it powering on? Then you can get into BIOS and most BIOS usually have a revert to stock kind of setting.

Yes I cleared the cmos and all is well but I'm still keen to clock my CPU would this give me more fps ? Any tips how I go about the right way to over clock? Bit surprised that the asus bios settings were I can over clock just crash the pc

I have Asus AI suite, and it worked great for overclocking my cpu to 4.4ghz, it should reset you computer multiple times, it making changes in the bios. But if it taking 3-5 minutes something is wrong.

That being said I agree with the others, manual overclock is the best overclock, I got my cpu to 4.5ghz with a much lower voltage doing It manually

Ah. I have an old lab rat PC with a Phenom II AMD on an AM3+ motherboard. Tried AMD overdrive and it brought the voltage super low.

But in general voltage imbalances are the issue with the auto tweakers. Remember not every chip is the same, and they are calibrating highly generalized settings or using faulty computer logic.
