SSD "Not Detected" in UEFI

Hey guys,

So I built my new PC about 2 weeks ago. At the time, I was able to install and set up everything perfectly, except the SSD as I was still waiting on the M.2 -> PCIE adapter card to arrive. So in the mean time, I set up my PC on the HDD; installed windows and drivers, etc.

The adapter card arrived today so naturally the first thing I did was attempt to install the SSD. After it was secured in the PCIE slot, I turned on my PC and booted the UEFI. The UEFI now had an extra option in the storage config, "M.2 (PCIE)" that wasn't available when I originally set it up. I thought 'ok good, it sees the SSD'. Upon clicking it, it said "Not Detected".

I went to google for answers, which told me to boot the PC as normal and go to Disk Management. Sure enough, the SSD was there. I was able to format it and get it setup with a clone of windows and my drivers (cloned from my HDD using EaseUS). The last thing I had to do was reboot the PC without the HDD, so that it would load off the SSD.

Upon reboot, it took me to the UEFI and asked me to select/insert a boot device. It gives me the option to select M.2(PCIE), but still says "Not Detected".

How is it that I can make full use of the SSD in Windows, but the MotherBoard doesn't even know it's there?

Does anyone know how to get the MotherBoard to boot off the SSD?

Relevant Specs
CPU: Intel i5 6600k
MoBo: ASRock Z170 Pro4
OS: Win10
SSD: Intel SSD6
Adapter Card: SilverStone ECM21

P.S. - I've made sure all parts are compatible and are installed correctly (and this confirmed by the fact it works perfectly in windows).

Solution
Hey there, Omistone.

Check for an available firmware update for the SSD model. Try updating or resetting your BIOS/UEFI, to see if that fixes things up. Give it a go with a different computer to see if the same thing happens.
From what I was able to find out your motherboard has a M.2 PCIE slot and it supports boot from NVMe drives.
You could test the SSD for errors with a diagnostic tool, just to make sure that it's in good condition.

You could also get in touch with the mobo manufacturer's customer support to see if you might be missing something like a specific setting.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hey Boogieman, thanks for replying.

I'm still not sure what its problem was, but after restarting the PC over and over again (5+ times), it eventually appeared as a boot option.

Although it wouldn't accept the cloned software, so I've just had to reinstall Windows and all my drivers on it. I'll be able to plug my HDD in to get anything else important back.

Still confused as to why it wasn't working, but I'm just glad everything is running smoothly now so I'm not complaining haha.

Hopefully it stays this way. Sometimes (no matter how rare it is), the clone might not work as it should. A fresh install of Windows is always recommended anyway, so you're better off this way.
As for the HDD, you could backup the important data and reformat it so that you could have a fresh secondary storage drive with no trace of old system files and/or partitions left on it. Just make sure that the SSD is working properly before you do that.

Cheers!
