I've got a problem with one computer that is driving me mad! For a couple of years I've been dealing with it continuously dropping its connection with the internet, while still successfully pinging the router.

I ran a ping test with two computers simultaneously, pinging both the router and Google's static DNS (8.8.8.8). They both work fine for a bit then the troubled computer times out from the DNS but is still communicating fine with the router, while the other computer remains connected to both. Simply turning off the computers WiFi and then back on again regains the connection with the DNS. The problem doesn't occur when using an ethernet cable.

I've ruled out firewall/software issues as I did a clean OS re-install and the problem persisted while the machine was empty of any files or programs, and have done all the usual network troubleshooting and so on.

Any ideas where the issue could lie? Is it a problem with the computer? Here's a screenshot of what is happening. http://goo.gl/crZqyy

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hello Samomatt,

That is frustrating! It sounds like the router is functioning correctly and that the issue isn't the address being actively renewed although it may be. I had this same issue recently, and I was able to resolve the issue by DLing and installing the newest device drivers for WLAN and performing a winsock reset after boot.

If that does not work, perhaps configure the computer system IP to be static and set up an IP reservation for that system on the router.

If the system is still experiencing issues at that point it could be an issue with the WLAN module.

Hopefully my suggestions are of some use to you!

Hey helmthew2010, thanks for your reply!

I'm on a Mac so a winsock reset isn't applicable unfortunately, and I tried the IP reservation but that didn't work. I've been running tests on a few networks and the problem occurs everywhere, while other MacBooks are simultaneously connected and working fine. I did a traceroute when the problem happens and it returned all asterisks's from the first hop.

Any idea what could be going on?

Cheers
