Hi guys, I've just purchased:

- 2x8GB Red Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2400MHz

My old RAM sticks are:

- 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte SKT-1155 Z77-D3H

I've just tested leaving my old RAM in with the new, and it seems to be working fine as 24GB of memory. My question is:

Should I leave the old RAM in and stick with 24GB, or am I better off taking the old out and sticking with just the 16GB 2400Mhz?

Many thanks!

Also just a side question, my motherboard has colored DIMM slots. I always assumed that placing the sticks in their corresponding colors was the way. However, I tried keeping my 4GB sticks in the white slots (where they were previously) and adding the 8GB sticks into the blue slots, and my PC would not boot. However, when putting the 4GB sticks in the first 2 white and blue slots, and the 8GB sticks in the second set of white and blue slots, it booted fine! What is this about, I thought the dual-channel DIMM slots where color coordinated to put the same type of RAM in?

Solution
Try them with just the 8GB sticks in the blue slots, boot, go into BIOS and set DRAM voltage to 1.56, save, exit, shutdown, then try adding the 4 GB sticks in the white slots and see what happens

well it's alittle bit of an uknown when using idfferent ram sticks.

Technically you can use different ram sticks together, they will be adjusted by your motherboard. It is no recommended because it introduces system stability ISSUES. Definetly you cannot overclock the ram either.

Why do you need 24GB? 16gb sounds like plenty

( i would really stick with just the 16gb.. mixing ram.. can cause all kinds of issues, especially since some rams dont use same power and what not as other... there are a lot of variables, if it were the Same TYPE of ram but just different size, that's a different story)
