GPU-Z/HWMonitor not reading mobile GPU properly.

Hello again!

After the countless problems with my Lenovo Y50-70 and the utter unwillingness of Lenovo Support to fix them, I've decided to give up. Problems keep on popping up and it's only a matter of time before the laptop dies on me (the good news is that my HDD isn't showing many problems lately).

So now the biggest problem is, yet again, my GPU. It's acting strange. I updated my drivers today (default GeForce Experience method). I always walk away from the installation because I don't like how the screen flickers during the process. When I came back, the laptop had apparently restarted, which is unusual. GeForce Experience now cannot optimize any games.

During idle, HWMonitor never shows my GPU, not the temps, clocks, anything. So I downloaded two different pieces of software. Both show GPU temp at 0.00 and all clocks at either -- or 0.

I did all these tests while idle. I had GPU-Z monitor my integrated graphics, and that seems to be working fine. When I switch to dedicated, it monitors it for 1 second, during which I usually see about 400 MHz and 36 degrees of temp. Then it goes back to 0.

Is it possible that the dedicated GPU isn't running at all when the laptop isn't under load? Is it switching over to my integrated graphics when browsing, turning off the 960m completely? I remember that one time HWMonitor did show my GPU, but after closing the app I was using (Red Orchestra 2), the reading froze and upon restarting the software, the GPU was gone again.

I'm not experiencing any artifacts, I can run Black Ops 2 at full settings, clean 60. Some games stutter now for some reason. What do you say? Is it a simple matter of Intergrated/Dedicated switching? Or is the GPU done?

Summary:

- Geforce experience cannot optimize anymore.
- Sudden restart after driver update.
- Software not reading GPU when idle.
- Odd fluctuating moaning sound (sometimes), which I'm guessing is coil whine.

I also wanted to ask if a CPU temp of around 40-50 C is normal during idle on the 4720hq on balanced mode.

Thanks!

Oh thank goodness for that then. That's one problem out of the way.

So what do you think caused that odd restart after the driver update? And how come Geforce experience cannot optimize games? I might have a solution for that, but I don't know. I'm running BitDefender, which apparently blocks downloads by Geforce experience, could it be then that the driver update wasn't complete, rolled back, restarted, and is now somehow corrupt? Or is that an unlikely cause?

Thanks again!
