Hi there,
I seem to be at wall with this issue of mine and would appreciate any light shed on said issue.

So heres the deal. I have an msi gaming laptop.

MSI GT72VR - 6RD

32GB DDR4 2400
OS - 256GB M.2 SSD (Standard, not nvme)
ITB HDD (storage)
1060 6GB
INTEL i7-6700HQ

I need to know if i were to purchase a new SSD to hold the OS and it was a M.2 NVME, woud it fit and work

I guess the real question is

Are standard M.2 slots and M.2 NvME slots backwards compatible with each other????

Beside the obvious didference in the look of the pins (m.2 standard has 2 small pins on outsides and one long pin in middle and nvme has one small and one long) they seem to be the same length just different pin setup.

if i purchased a m.2 nvme ssd would it work in my laptops m.2 slot but at the slower/older speed of standard m.2 or would it not fit/work at all?

Again, any help is appreciated and sorry if this thread has already been discussed elsewhere.

Hey there, karazyhorse.

From what I was able to find about that laptop model, it does support NVMe SSDs and you should be able to take full advantage of such a drive. For the M.2 form factor there are currently 2 sockets commonly used for SSDs - B and M. So as you've described your current M.2 SATA drive it sounds like it has B+M connector. That type of M.2 drives is compatible with both type of sockets - B, M. Having in mind your laptop's M.2 port is x4 and has SATA support as well, it means that it's an M socket. This would mean that you can connect all M.2 SSDs (both SATA and NVMe) as long as they have either M or B+M connectors. You can find more about those type of connections and compatibility here...

As for the NVMe SSD you could confirm that with the laptop manufacturer's customer support as well, just to be on the safe side.

Hope that helps.
