Samsung 850 evo & encryption

Hello,

I just purchased a Samsung 850 evo SSD and I'm looking at encryption options. The drive has not been installed and is still in the box. This is all foreign to me so I apologize for any stupid questions.

Does this drive support hardware-based encryption? Is this something my motherboard ( GA-Z97X-UD5H ) has to support?

Is it viable to use tools such as VeraCrypt to encrypt an entire SSD? Would said encryption decrease the lifespan or performance of the drive? Is there any other software to consider, such as BitLocker?

Are there any downsides or risks to using encryption like this? Other than the obvious loss of all my data in the event that I lose my password or key files.

Any information would be appreciated. Once again, this drive has not been used yet, so there is no worry of not being able to secure previous data.

Thanks.

Encryption for home usage is not really a good idea in my opinion. It is only adding extra work for you, if something happens.

Encryption should work independently from the mainboard and should not shorten the lifespan of the SSD in a way you would notice it.
I do not know about VeraCrypt but the SSDs in the laptops and PCs we use in the office are encrypted via BitLocker.
Only the IT dept has the key/password.

What I know about the downsides (please feel free to add or correct)...Downside beside loosing password or keys or whatever is e.g. if you someday wants to clone the drive, you must encrypt it first and this takes quite a lot longer than without encryption.
