Hi, I'm not looking to buy, was just curious, how is it there are gaming laptops out there with 1070/1080 mobile GPUs which are benching pretty much the same as desktop variants?

They have less area to cool, a much smaller form factor and way less heatsink surface area (in fact seem to be solely reliant on heatpipe coverage) yet seem to perform the same?!

Why are we hanging these huge, 1Kg GPUs in desktop machines if these super small lightweight GPUs offer everything and more? purely cost?

In a laptop the cooling system is designed specifically for that model therefor it is far easier to optimize the cooling whereas in a desktop the manufacturers have no way of knowing what kind of conditions the card will live in so the coolers tend to be a little overkill, however this also leads to a much quieter system that can overclock much more readily than a laptop based card whilst maintaining a lower temperature.
