Will Upgrading to an i7 3770 make much difference in performance?

Heya, I have been noticing in games lately that I have been getting lag spikes which last for 3-4 seconds and is very frustrating. I have been told that a CPU upgrade would cure this. As I have an H77 chipset motherboard, I don't want to upgrade to Skylake for example as that would mean a windows reinstall etc. So would and upgrade to an i7 3770 make much difference of I was upgrading from an i5 3470?

Can we get a full system spec of your build and what games youre playing, this will help us a little more in understanding whats going on.

GTA V and BF1 are cpu intensive, I would check your temps and see if lags are caused by that.

After running the GTA V benchmark, i am running around 60 degrees c on the cpu package at about 50 fps

As faalin says, those two games are among the most CPU intensive of any out, and i7's do make a significant difference.
