Currently, I alternate between my parents' houses every 2 weeks, each time lugging around my PC which is built in a very heavy Fractal R5. I want to get something a lot lighter to carry between them, but I am not sure whether to get a pascal based gaming laptop or an ITX based mini gaming PC. They will both be used on a desk, but I will move them to other people's houses etc. I like the idea of how portable a laptop is and how closely it performs to a desktop, but I also like the fact that ITX PCs are quieter and more powerful. Weight and bulkiness is the main issue for me, but I am not aware of the weight of the average ITX build. I do like to have a quiet pc as well, but laptops seem to be the opposite. Thanks for any answers! :)

PC in my signature is crammed into an ITX build. To say they are faster than laptops is a dramatic understatement. You can fit a 6700k and a GTX 1080 in quite a few tiny ITX cases, this is so far beyond anything a laptop can do it isn't even comparable.

THAT SAID... an ITX is not THAT much lighter. They almost feel heavier because of how dense they are. The heavy stuff is all still in there.

What is your budget? Can you have a desk at both places with a monitor and keyboard at the ready? Moving the desktop is less of an issue than moving an expensive high end monitor, mechanical keyboard, gaming mouse, and audio monitors - plus your controllers, HOTAS, Racing Wheel, etc.

Thanks for the reply! I have a desk, monitor, keyboard and mouse at both locations so it is really just the computer itself that has to be moved. My budget is around £1400. The only laptops I have seen in that price range seem to get very hot and loud which I am not a fan of. For that sort of price, I have only been able to get a 6700hq and a gtx 1060 with 16gb of ram, where as for less in an ITX build I can get a i7 6700k, gtx 1070, 32gb ram. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Cr6L7h I am a bit concerned about the longevity of the laptops due to the heat and the laptops lack of upgradability. :/ You said the weight wasn't much difference compared to my tower, how much does yours weigh roughly? For reference, my current PC has a G3258 oc'd to 4.2ghz, 8gb ram and an r9 280x

Prolly under 30 lbs. GTX 1080, cryorig h7 and the rs600 are pretty heavy. Adds up.

Yeah I'd go with an ITX build. Can't recommend the rainjintek Metis enough. I have the wife's build in an unmodified one, and mine has been modded to have two fans on top. Great little case. You may need to go with an SFX power supply for GPU clearance like I did.

OK that's great, thanks so much for the in depth replies! I am looking at the Silverstone ML08 as a case because it's around the size of an xbox and has a handle. :)

So my ITX build weighs 16lbs and my ATX build with similar components weighs 21lbs, to be fair the ATX case is steel, not aluminum.
The ITX is 13L and the ATX is 41L

So it only weighs like 25% less but is 1/3 of the size. I was curious.

That surprised me. I expected it to be a lot lighter. Still a tad unsure what to do about this. The laptop I like the look of has an i7 6700hq, 16gb ram, 256 nvme drive, 1tb hdd, gtx 1060. It costs roughly £300 more than the itx build I posted earlier, but I really like the look of it. I know performance won't be as good, but still it will perform to what I need. I will be using it like a desktop with 3 monitors hooked up. I'd rather a 15.6 inch over 17.3 but I can't find anything like this for the price. Also, I guess bigger screen means more space for cooling. The laptop weighs 9 Ibs, which is a lot but it runs a lot cooler on the surface than others. I think the main reason I would like a laptop is because I can take it downstairs to do school work and not be confined to my room. Thanks for the stats. Here is the link to the laptop: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-asus-rog-g752vm-gc010t-26ghz-intel-core-i7-6700hq-16gb-ddr4-256gb-nvmeplus1tb-hdd-6gb-gtx-1060-d

The question now is, should I wait for Kaby Lake? I ideally want to get this computer asap due to upcoming exams early next year (GCSE) but Kaby Lake is due to come out soon. I have seen a table showing mobile HQ cpus to be released January. I am just a tad worried that if I wait, there won't be a laptop that is right for me for at least another couple of months due to price and design. If I buy now at least I know it will be good for at least 2-3 years. Also, judging by what has been coming out, Kaby Lake will only have a 5% or so improvement in performance. Battery life isn't really an issue because I will have a laptop plugged in most of the time.
