Hey guys!

I was wondering if it's worth buying a used gaming pc.

I found this and was wondering if its worth the buy.

Processor - Intel core i5 4690k (overclockable)
Motherboard - Asus Z97-A Intel 1150 ATX Gaming Motherboard
Memory - 16GB - Ballistix Tactical Tracer LED RAM 8GB, 8GB Hyperx fury
GPU - Zotac Nvidia GTX 980ti AMP Edition (With custom green power cable)
SSD - 120GB Kingston v300
HDD - 1TB Western Digital Green
PSU - Corsair VS 650w
Case fans - x6 LED Green
CPU cooler - CoolerMaster Hyper 212X (120mm x2 Push/Pull config)
Thermal Paste - Arctic MX-4 Thermal paste
Wireless card - TP-LINK Archer T9E AC1900 Dual Band Wireless
OS - Genuine Windows 10 Home - 64 Bit

Its going to cost around 700 English pounds approximately.
So is it worth it?

Solution
- SSD is low grade
- PSU is low grade
- no need to go for a 980Ti. the more in power draw will relativate cost compared to a 1070 very quickly.
- don't mix RAM, ESPECIALLY FROM DIFFERENT BRANDS
- no need for 6 case fans or thermal paste

I'd say no. ~700GBP is definitely on the high side for that.

Consider you can have newer components (Skylake, 6GB GTX 1060), a 16GB 'kit' and a quality PSU (SeaSonic S12II 620W) and comparable storage for around 900GBP

I wouldn't necessarily recommend the SSD, cooler, case etc - just showing what a comparable performing, newer system would cost - which includes manufacturer's warranties*.

*Some components, provided they're not >X age etc can transfer to a new owner, but not all components/brands etc can do so.

Well if you look at it that way, it's worth a lot. Thank you Barty for the detailed list and for your help!

isnt the 980 ti quite a bit stronger than a 1060?
id rather the used build with an upgraded PSU i think than this build

In some games, yes. In others, it's pretty close.

Again, I just put that together quickly as a 'comparable' build with new components - simply to get a pricing idea.

The used build is by no means 'bad', I just think it is at the price mentioned.
At 600GBP, it's a no brainer. Personally the ~200GBP (likely less if you shop around) difference & the 0-15/20% FPS difference is worth the warranty etc to me, but it wouldn't be to everyone.

Well.. Its actually still under warranty, but it'll net a total of 650 excluding shipping.

Who's providing the warranty? If this was put together by the current user - some of the manufacturer's warranties will transfer, some won't (and the ones that will, would need to be registered).

If this was bought from a 'boutique' builder, I've yet to heard of one that transfers easily.... and very few that are actually any help when dealing with them (outside of shipping the entire rig back to them).

For example, the GPU. Zotac's stance (for the UK) is a 5 year warranty if registered within 14days of purchase. 2 years otherwise. Source: http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-cards/204247-graphics-card-warranties-uk-only-lets-see-how-good-they-really-look-5.html

I can't find a UK position on their warranty transferring, but in the US/Canada

Products must be purchased as new from an authorized ZOTAC reseller. Warranty only applies to the original purchaser of the product and cannot be transferred. Products purchased as secondhand or used, or from auction sites, do not carry any warranty.

Source: https://www.zotac.com/us/page/product-warranty-policy

This will vary for each component/manufacturer.

From the 'boutique' aspect, consider the T&C from Chillblast as an example:
https://www.chillblast.com/terms-and-conditions.html

All warranty/service etc is an agreement between the company (Chillblast) and the customer (ie. not you). So any warranty they provide does not transfer to you*.

*. There may be different T&C for other boutique builders, but Chillblast is the only one who posts the full T&C (including Warranty info) on their site that I could find.
