I'm new to this whole pc building thing and i recently got i5 4460 and i am unable to find a suitable mobo (within $60) which is both compatible and doesn't require any BIOS update

BTW is there any way to update the bios without having cpu installed? (i have a msi h81m e33 but after lots of research i found that it isn't compatible..... any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

just got to look at them things some don't need a bios update and that cpu will work out of the box on first release

I'm sure msi , asus and giga got some as well - just check all the cpu support lists on whats supported...

so i can get msi h81m e33 mobo from a nearby store but not sure if it's compatible.... I've checked the compatibility which says it requires bios update but few guys are able to pair the two without any bios update...

msi is not so clear and you got to head scratch at time on some boards

heres how I see it ??

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/H81M-E33.html#support-cpu

Core i5 Haswell Refresh i5-4460 100 3.2 1M 6M C0 84 HD Graphics 4600 1100MHz 7817v64.zip

I'm going to assume that 7817v64 means bios 6.4 ??

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/H81M-E33.html#down-bios

then if that's so you do risk the board not having that bios and you would need to flash [supported cpu required to do so]

if you could spend the bit extra order that asrock it also is a newer chipset [9 series over that 8 series ] and helps insure the older haswells are fully supported under there first release bios's

thing is them few guys may of got a board that shipped from MSI with the needed bios ? your not ever guaranteed that and you could get a older stocked board with a earlier not supported bios on it ? so your rolling the dice on the hope it does

they use to put that info on the box on a sticker ? my lesson on this is all ways plan on the board to have first release you are guaranteed that for sure

asrock support pages are a bit more clear to understand

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157673

1150 Core i5 i5-4460(C0) Haswell-R 3.2GHz 6MB 84W All
1150 Core i5 i5-4460S(C0) Haswell-R 2.9GHz 6MB 65W All
1150 Core i5 i5-4460T(C0) Haswell-R 1.9GHz 6MB 35W All

supported under ALL bios right out of the box

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B85M-HDS%20R2.0/?cat=CPU

now take note that same board but NOT the revision 2 does require a bios flash if you don't get the correct bios

1150 Core i5 i5-4460(C0) Haswell-R 3.2GHz 6MB 84W P1.60
1150 Core i5 i5-4460S(C0) Haswell-R 2.9GHz 6MB 65W P1.50
1150 Core i5 i5-4460T(C0) Haswell-R 1.9GHz 6MB 35W P1.60

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81M-HDS/?cat=CPU

so be careful if you order

H81M-HDS = may have to flash to be supported to at least bios 1.60

H81M-HDS ''R2.0'' supported with all bios out of the box

a slight mistake as that can cost you down time and a issue
