Hello all,

I am doing a build and on boot i receive 5 short beeps on my MSI Gaming 970 motherboard. When i checked the MSI support website i saw that 5 beeps was a bad processor with the AMI bios. I have tried removing the memory which does a continuous beep. I have removed the video card which does 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. I had re-seated all of the components and still get the 5 short beeps.

I did an RMA on the processor and the new one showed up today. I installed it and still get the 5 short beeps.

Did i get another bad processor or is the motherboard bad?

well best I can see on that board 5 beep = processor as you did

according to msi your cpu is supported under first release [M0] so that should be good ??

''AMI BIOS Beep Codes:''

http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/the-complete-bios-beep-guide.95391/

sad msi don't give this info not even in the boards manual

all I can say is maybe a lemon motherboard you replaced the cpu im sure the bios is default cause you cant post to it due to the beeps and cpu error should prevent that ?

then I guess you tried to clear cmso [reset the bios ] ?

hard to think you got 2 bad cpu's in a row

I'm sure you as I did google this and your board and seen a few threads on that ????

thing is with out the cpu working...

It may be bad luck, or your motherboard could be broken somewhere, a broken circuit is likely making it impossible for the motherboard to communicate with the CPU. Again, it could be your luck is just bad, replacing the CPU once again could fix it.

maybe some one will chime in here with better help ??

funny thing is your board has a AMI bios this from MSI

https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/bios-beep-codes

under AMI bios codes notice that 1 long beep and 2 short beeps is not even listed as a AMI code ??

in all thing happen like a lemon motherboard could be as simple as a bad bios chip or factory corrupted bios flash ?

rma the motherboard and see what you get then ?? 2ed time may be the charm ?

A lot more questions than answers lol,

sad msi don't give this info not even in the boards manual
The MSI manual does not have any type of literature about beep codes.

all I can say is maybe a lemon motherboard you replaced the cpu im sure the bios is default cause you cant post to it due to the beeps and cpu error should prevent that ?
Correct, i cannot post after the beeps.

then I guess you tried to clear cmso [reset the bios ] ?
I reset the CMOS and still had the same results.

hard to think you got 2 bad cpu's in a row
Ive never received a bad CPU in my life hard to think i got 2 bad ones back to back.

thing is with out the cpu working your stuck trying a motherboard rma ??
I think my next course of action will be to RMA the motherboard.

One of the other things i have read said the motherboard CPU socket could be damaged so it couldn't differentiate between the motherboard or the CPU from being damaged.
So i dunno ill waste neweggs money on RMAs haha.

unlike intel that its real easy to see socket damage cause the ''pins'' are in the socket where aMD the pins are on the cpu ..

but you know it now between you and newegg and that ball in in there court on a yes or no or drive to there offices and have a face to face over it if local ?? lol.....

thing is now if something was bad wrong with the board did it damage the cpu on top of everything else when you put power to it ??? [hope I did not jinx you in any way ]

sad thing is we all get the lemon at one time or another just can be all part of it from time to time

good luck
