4GB Stick of DDR2 RAM?

You have 4 RAM slots with a max of 8gb. 8 / 4 = 2, you can only run 2gb modules in each slot. There is a reason Crucial doesn't offer a 4gb module for that motherboard, because it wont work. With a defective RAM bank the most you can get is 6gb, meaning 2gb will run in single channel.

If you install a 4gb module, the system wont boot. The modules density will be too high and the board wont be able to use it. If you need/want 8gb, you will have to replace the board.
May as well add this to the list of what to be aware of.

Depending on how old the motherboard is you have, each board may have a limitation on the size or capacity each of the ram memory slots on the board it can access Clubspade.

So you should find this out by looking up the brand name of the board you have and its model number.

For example if the board says it can take a maximum of 8Gb of memory and has four memory slots then the maximum capacity of each memory module per slot that can be read or recognized is 2Gb of memory stick per slot.

If quotes 8Gb as a maximum then fitting a single 4Gb memory stick may result in only 2Gb of it ever being read as it`s total memory size so watch out for this.

lots of answers wowie, I'd like to thank you for answering, but here's the problem:
One of you just linked me to a bunch of 2gb and 1gb sticks
I'm not paying $90 for 4gb of RAM
I'm not a TOTAL moron, I know how 32 and 64 bit work, this PC is not mine, it operates on an Asus P5K-E motherboard. It maxes out at 8gb, and one of the slots is busted. The only way to reach 8 is to remove one of the three 2gb sticks and replace it with a 4gb.

Assuming what Shaun o said doesn't apply to this motherboard. I have looked around before, seems like most of it is that AMD only stuff. I'll dig through what you've all sent me some more, thank you.
