I just bought the most expensive Asus motherboard there is and I went through one of their listed retailers to buy it. I researched the company. It's a chain of computer stores in California with very good Yelp reviews and an online store.

I called to talk to them about the board. I asked the guy if he was certain it's a brand new motherboard (This board has been in very short supply so far). He said it's brand new and offered to have their people do a POST test and pin check for me which I accepted.

Today I got the board and while everything looks great (I can't test it yet because the rest of the components won't be here till the 1st) I did notice that the front and back cover to the manual has scratches and tiny indentations on it like it had been used before. I checked the driver DVD and didn't see any scratches.

Is this common or should I be worried that I was sold a returned board?

Well even sellers of the hardware you buy from if they offer to do a test to ensure the board is in full working condition.
will still need to consult the motherboard manual to ensure proper setup of the bios of the motherboard to test it is fully working.

The manual even in your case will need to be read at some point to ensure the board works right and the way it should by having to consult the manual for setup, and settings.

And is likely why the manual may look or have scratches on it.
It`s obvious at some point information has been read from it for correct bios setup and testing of the motherboard.
And it would of been required to do a full post test of the motherboard it`s self DrGreer.

It makes sense does it not ?

Isn`t the...

I'm not really too sure but here is my opinion :

If it was second hand, the person who bought it surely would have known what they were doing (because who buys an expensive motherboard if you barely know how to put together a computer) and in that case, assuming they have knowledge in building systems most likely would not of even opened the manual. I know i have never actually read one and used it enough to scratch it and dent it.

so in conclusion its probably just defects from shipping or manufacturing, not everything is made / handled to perfection.

Isn`t the main point that the board was tested and working ?
Rather than worrying about a few scratches on a manual ?

There again if I had to be honest with you there are plenty of people who don`t even bother to read the manual in order to set a motherboard bios up correctly.

And then post on the forum here that they have a problem, and only because they never read the manual from front to back. Where if they had bothered to they could of resolved there problem by the simple realization that the manual exist to help you fix the problem, in the first place.

Instead they chuck it in a corner of the room assemble the parts of there pc build and wonder why it`s not working as it should or has a problem.

But it`s just what some people are really like in a fever pitch to get there new pc system built DrGreer.

I`m sure everything is fine, and as I said the manual is slightly scratched due to the seller testing the motherboard and having to consult the manual for the correct settings of the bios to test various I/O ports and interfaces of the motherboard are indeed fully working right.

It wasn't so much the scratches but the tiny dimples in the cover that got me thinking but alright, I'll take that answer. I just hope I don't run into any issues where I have to go through RMA hell. As for reading the manual, as soon as I got the motherboard box open and saw it, all else stopped and I immediately began memorizing it. I wish I'd have known Asus was going to post the board on Amazon for the same price I got it for the day I received it (Just saw it on there). It's an X99-E-10G WS if you were wondering.

Anyway, thanks.
