Is there any big difference? I have a Asus H97M E mobo and incase I want to upgrade, should I buy a new 6th gen mobo plus i5 or just an 4th gen i5 wouldn't make much of a difference?

Also, this motherboard I have supports 1600(o.c) max, I only do gaming, does getting a mobo which supports higher frequency do any good?

Solution
The difference in performance is generally less than 10% per clock, so if you can buy a slightly faster clocked CPU with the money saved, the difference in performance is zero. The i5 4690 is clocked about 10% higher than the i5 6500.

Differences are so small between 4th and 6th gen that there is no point in changing platforms. Faster ram can give you 1-2 extra fps so in real live makes completely no differences in gaming.

if you have an i5 right now. There is no reason to worry about upgrading. we can "assume" your system is still pretty decent (but some specs would be appreciated)

Well, I guess your best option is buying a high end second hand, or 4460 which is low end i5. If you can only get 4460 then go for the 6th gen. Even your choice of second hand may be a bit of wasted money. To get 6th gen it's about 350$ if you want that path.

What do you want to achieve? Do you want to spend?

Rn I have a i3 4160, but in future what do I upgrade to? I mentioned that I've built this PC for gaming. Yesterday I paired a rx 470 msi with it, bought PC in this Feb.

I meant like, is it worth it? Picking a 4th gen over a 6th gen? If so, I wont have to change my H97me and corsair 4x2 1600mhz rams because they cost me good monies :3

Worth like in this specific case.
