My other stick as also 8gb, DDR3 and the same speed. I have a suspicion he's got me some server RAM, but I thought DIMM meant it was desktop compatible...

My other RAM is Kingston ValueRAM 8GB (1x 8GB) DDR3 1600MHz Non-ECC, and my MOBO is MSI H81M-E34 Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel H81 DDR3

Solution
That RAM module from Ebay is "ECC" (Error Correcting Code), whereas your existing RAM is "non-ECC", the type required on the vast majority of desktop motherboards.

"ECC" RAM is most likely not compatible with your motherboard, hence why it doesn't work.
The module is ECC, mostly used in workstations and servers. Your motherboard:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/H81M-E34.html#hero-specification
only supports non-ECC, unbuffered modules. It's not usable in your system.

It's not a good idea to mix RAM modules, it can lead to compatibility issues beyond what you are already experiencing. Not all modules play well with each other.
