My computer has the following specs
CPU: Intel i7-5820K
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-Gaming-5P
Memory: 64 GB (4 x 16GB DDR4)
The motherboard supports up to 128 GB memory but the CPU specs say it supports 64 GB maximum memory.
Found a blog on PC World that claimed a similar spec PC took 128 GB. I happen to have a a 4 x 8 GB spares lying around recently and wanted to give it a shot. It Works !!! My PC now has 96 GB of RAM.
1. Why is it working ? Intel CPU specs say 64 GB max.
2. The X99 is quad-channel so I installed the 16GB sticks in Channel A / B and the 8GB sticks in Channel C / D. Is it good to keep it like that as the memory capacity / speeds are different ? Would it do any damage to the computer ?
4 x 16GB DDR4 2800 MHz (1.35V, 14-16-16-36)
4 x 8GB DDR4 2666 MHz (1.2V, 16-18-18-35)
Thanks,
Rick.
