Help with hard drive disappearing

Hello, I've been having trouble with my hard drive for a little over a month that I can't seem to figure out. I've looked up all sorts of forum posts and tried trouble shooting it myself but the problem doesn't seem to be a simple one.

My C drive is an ssd with Windows 10 installed on it. The drive I'm having problems with is my M: Media drive. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB drive model: WD2002FAEX. I use the drive for media (big surprise), mostly Steam games and video recording. I've had the drive since April 2013 and up until recently I never had any problems with it.

The problem first popped up around September 17. Mad Max was 75% off on Steam and since I'd never played it and it seemed fun I figured I might as well get it. I started the download and started playing some Overwatch with my friends. At the match end screen I saw that none of the assets had loaded, and none of the menu options were working. I didn't have any problems in game, but I'm assuming that was all still saved/loaded in RAM. I tried to restart the game but I got a popup saying my shortcut target was missing. Looking in file explorer I saw that my M drive was missing and I was worried that it might have completely died on me.

I tried restarting my computer and there it was, like nothing happened. I then ran a Windows error check, short, and extended S.M.A.R.T. tests which all came back fine. I started up the Mad Max download on Steam again and a few minutes later my M drive was gone again. The same thing happened when I tried to update Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. After testing it, it seemed like writing to any larger game file was causing the problem. Downloading/updating small games didn't seem to cause the drive to disappear. Also if my computer goes into hibernation the drive is almost always gone when I wake it up, with or without Steam running.

The problem seemed to be gone for a while, but it happened again today. I'm guessing it was from Steam auto downloading a game update, unfortunately I wasn't at my computer when it happened so I can't be sure.

Luckily the drive is still under warranty so I can get it replaced if I need to but I want to be sure it's worth the time/effort to do so and not some simple fix that I've overlooked. If you need any information about my system to help try to diagnose the problem let me know and I will post it as soon as I can.

Welcome to the community, @sethb114!

I'm sorry to hear about your connectivity issues with the WD Black. You have done an amazing job with the troubleshooting so far, however, I'd advise you to also try swapping the SATA cable and the SATA port where the WD Black is connected to the motherboard. This disappearing could be caused by a faulty connection to the drive itself. I'd also recommend you to check your power settings for the hard drives in your system.

Give the connection swapping a try and let me know how the WD Black performs afterwards.
Good luck!

Sorry it took so long to get back to this, my schedule hasn't left me much time to work on my computer.

My power setting for my hard drives is: Turn off hard disk after - 20 Minutes. I don't think that would be the problem, but I could be wrong. I don't remember ever changing the power setting or any other settings related to my hard drives, and I'm pretty sure I haven't changed any since I started having problems with the drive. If there's any settings other than power I should look at let me know.

As for swapping the SATA cables and ports I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I will try to get that done tonight and let you know the results sometime tomorrow.

Hey there again, @sethb114!

Let me know how the cable swapping goes after you do it. Make sure you check how the drive would behave if you connect it to another SATA port on the mobo as well. If you have access to another PC, you could also try plugging the WD Black there as well. This will easily help us determine whether or not, it is the source of the issue.
Either way, make sure you backup all important data prior to the troubleshooting. Have a copy somewhere off-site before you tamper with the storage.

Keep me posted.

I haven't had any problems with it yet since swapping the connections, but I'm not sure the issue has been predictable enough for me to say 100% it's been fixed just yet. I'll have to give it some time to be sure, but it seems alright for now.

Hello again, @sethb114!

I'm glad that the issue has been resolved so far. The HDD disappearing did sound like the issue was coming from a failed connection, rather than the drive itself. However, I'd definitely advise you to keep an eye on it & have your peace of mind. The best way to avoid any potential fatal consequences is to make sure that you keep an off-site backup of the data as I already mentioned. A failed hardware can be easily replaced (RMA), but your personal files are priceless.
Always remember that "backup" means that you have your data stored in at least two locations. Moving data from your system drive to an external or another internal hard drive is not a backup, unless there is already a duplicate of the file on a different drive (off-site).

Best of luck! Let me know if there's anything concerning! :)
Cheers,
