so im looking at a r9 270x 2gb or 4gb in replacement for a 550ti for a friend. his pc is relatively old and I don't think his 400w psu could do it. is there a good budget psu that could handle it and is it worth buying. he isn't a major pc gamer but wants to be able to play stuff like gta v, bf1 at medium settings etc.

his specs
core i5 2320
unbranded 400w psu
mobo ?
gtx 550ti 1gb gddr5
4gb ram
1tb hdd

Solution
For a low PSU a GTX 750 Ti is a great option, otherwise a GTX 460 would be a better option than the 270x, depending his budget of course.

Very likely he'll need to upgrade his Mobo's BIOS in order to recognize any GPU starting a R7 260x / GTX 750 Ti.

For any combination of 'low budget' 'old system' and 'sketchy power supply' the 750ti is your best bet. If an RX 460 2gb is at the same price then that's another option. The 1050 is also an option, however it's likely to cost a bit more and given the circumstances I don't think the increased cost is worth it.

what is your budget?? get a gtx 1050 or a rx 460 instead, they both perform much better and cost the same or less than a 270x.. How much is the 270x your looking at? I would also consider going to 8gb of ram. the rx 460 is in the 100$ range and the 1050ti 130$.

the 460 performs anywhere from 25% to 75% better depending on the game than the 750ti, it cost basically the same price.. The 460 is like 100$, this means a 750ti would need to sell for less than 70$ to even consider it.

If you can get a RX 460 for up to 50% more than the cost of a 750ti then it's worth it based on performance. Realistically it's going to be the same or maybe 25% more. the 750ti..
