Hello, guys

I'm interested if picking a faster RAM (one with higher frequency / latency ratio) for my PC build would result in noticeably better overall system performance / snappiness? Or if it would improve (productivity-wise) any other aspect of the computing experience?

Solution
Not really. As long as system has enough of ram, any ram performance difference will be noticeable only on benchmarks. Also if you use integrated GPU for gaming (since it utilizes system ram as vram), then ram speed will be noticeable too.

I'm planning to build a Skylake PC with DDR4 RAM and am wondering if buying a higher-end RAM would be a wise choice

Well what type of ram? Normally ram don't make no difference it's normally the CPU And HDD, If you gonna do the ram thing don't expect higher FPS as it won't make the difference.

I know, that the faster RAM makes no difference for gaming, but I'm more interested in overall system performance

Hi OP,

I am assuming you are talking about the frequency of RAM like 2400mhz vs 3000mhz.
Generally Higher memory frequency means higher data bandwidth, and hence a faster system however Memory is not just about speed, it is also about latency. Memory modules have their latency rated by a score (that references their timings). Generally the higher the frequency the memory operates at the higher the latency.Ram with higher frequency with lower latency is often preferred however that comes with extra cost.

For example a memory module with 1600mhz with a latency 8 is often preferred over a memory module with 1600mhz with a latency 9.However the former will come a little costly then the latter.

You should balance the two factor for optimal performance

By saying "faster" I was referring to RAM modules with higher frequency / latency ratio. So, do the faster RAM modules make any difference in regards to OS snappiness and speed? Or will I be better off buying the cheapest RAM as the benefits won't be noticeable at all?
