I decided to upgrade the CPU in my old LGA1366 tower. I purchased a refurbished Xeon W3680 online from an independent IT distribution company.

CPU: Xeon W3680 (replaces i7 950)
MOBO: Asus P6X58D-E (BIOS 0803)
RAM: Corsair 12GB (6x2GB DDR3 1600 PC3 12800)
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TX
CASE: Antec 300
OS: Windows 10 64bit

After installing the 3680, the PC doesn't post or do anything other than turn the fans on. No BIOS displayed or error on the monitor. I've been running the latest BIOS (0803) for years. I've gone back and fourth 4 times between my old CPU and this one and can't get this processor going. I held the BIOS reset button for 5 sec on the back of the mobo/case and made no difference. I pressed the memOK button and it rebooted itself several times but no success.

I'm leaning towards a DOA on this W3680. I am typing from the PC using my old CPU. After going back to my older CPU, the BIOS shows everything correctly including the date which would mean the mobo battery still functions after the reset so I think I can rule that out.

The W3680 is basically a 980X with ECC memory enabled. The ASUS board supports the 32nm 980X and people have been running the Xeon W3680/X5680/W3690/X5690 without issue. Any help troubleshooting or advice would be grateful. Thanks.

The motherboard doesn't include the Xeon in its support list. Granted tho it should work. Could be a bad CPU. You may have to figure out the voltage for the new CPU and set them using the old one.
